Quick Verdict
What Is Semrush?
Semrush is an all-in-one SEO and digital marketing platform covering keyword research, technical SEO, rank tracking, backlink analysis, competitor research, and AI search visibility monitoring across engines including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.
The company was founded in Boston in 2008 by a group of SEO and IT specialists with the stated goal of making online competition more transparent for site owners and marketers. Over the following seventeen years it grew from a keyword-research utility into a broad marketing suite spanning more than fifty individual tools and add-ons, according to Semrush’s own company profile on G2. Who Owns Semrush
Semrush Holdings, Inc. was founded in Boston in 2008. Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) completed its acquisition of the company on April 28, 2026; Semrush now operates as an Adobe subsidiary, a fact reflected directly in the copyright footer of Semrush’s own pricing pages. Verified
This matters for buyers beyond trivia: an acquisition by a company the size of Adobe typically means product-roadmap and pricing decisions shift toward the acquirer’s broader strategy over time. Adobe’s own announcement language about future plans is explicitly forward-looking and non-committal, so this review does not speculate about post-acquisition pricing or feature direction beyond the acquisition itself.
Semrush’s AI Visibility Push
Since launching Semrush One in October 2025, Semrush has repositioned itself around what it calls Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — tracking how a brand appears inside AI-generated answers on platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, not just in traditional Google rankings. Vendor-Documented In G2’s Spring 2026 Report, Semrush was recognized as the #1-ranked tool in G2’s Answer Engine Optimization category alongside five other category leads. Vendor-Documented (source: Semrush press release, citing G2 Spring 2026 Report) This is a genuinely newer differentiator that older, pre-2025 Semrush reviews don’t account for.

How to pick a starting plan based on team size and whether AI-search visibility tracking matters to you.
Plan Selector
| If you are… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo user, testing the waters | SEO ($139/mo) | Lowest entry point with core keyword, audit, and tracking tools |
| Small team/agency needing AI-search tracking too | Starter ($199/mo) | Lowest tier bundling AI Visibility with SEO, plus MCP access |
| Growing agency managing several clients | Pro+ ($299/mo) | Adds historical data and 15-site headroom |
| Larger team needing API access | Advanced ($549/mo) | Highest self-serve tier, Share of Voice + API |
| Complex, multi-brand organization | Enterprise (custom) | Dedicated account management, custom limits |

| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per mo) | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | $139 | $117.33 | 5 sites, 500 keywords/day, Site Audit, Position Tracking, basic AI-search tracking |
| Starter | $199 | $165.17 | Adds MCP access, 50 AI prompts/day, AI-ready Site Audit |
| Pro+ | $299 | $248.17 | 15 sites, 1,500 keywords/day, historical data, keyword cannibalization tools |
| Advanced | $549 | $455.67 | 40 sites, 5,000 keywords/day, Share of Voice, API access |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Unlimited/custom limits, dedicated account manager |
Add-ons: additional user seats from $45/mo; Base Report $10/mo; Pro Report $20/mo; Lead Generation listing $90/mo. Vendor-Documented
What This Actually Costs a Small Team
Pricing tables show the sticker price, not the real bill. A 3-person agency on Pro+ ($248.17/mo annual) adding two extra seats at $45/mo each pays roughly $338/mo before any report add-ons. Add a Pro Report for client-facing dashboards and that climbs past $358/mo. If your team is more than one or two people, price the seats and add-ons, not just the base plan, before deciding this fits your budget.

Free Trial and Refunds
Semrush’s official offer is a 7-day free trial, cancel anytime. Verified Some third-party affiliate partners separately advertise a longer, partner-exclusive trial window — if you’re signing up through a promotional link rather than directly on semrush.com, confirm the exact terms with that partner before relying on them, since they can differ from Semrush’s own standard offer.
A Naming Note (Why You Might See “Pro” or “Guru” Elsewhere)
If you’re comparing this page against older bookmarks or other reviews, you may see plan names like “Pro,” “Guru,” or “Business” priced differently from the table above. Those are Semrush’s original Classic SEO Toolkit names, which still exist as a separate track alongside the newer Semrush One lineup described here. This page focuses on Semrush One because it’s the line Semrush is actively promoting to new customers as of the update date at the top of this page.
Semrush Features
Vendor-Documented throughout — descriptions reflect Semrush’s own published feature pages, not independent testing.

Semrush’s seven core feature modules, as published on Semrush’s own feature pages.
Keyword Research (Keyword Magic Tool)
Semrush’s keyword tool generates related keyword ideas from a seed term, groups them into topic clusters, and scores each for difficulty. It’s designed to help identify both high-volume head terms and longer, more specific phrases within the same research pass, so a single starting keyword can turn into a structured content plan rather than a flat list.
Site Audit
Site Audit crawls a domain and surfaces technical SEO issues — broken links, crawlability problems, page-speed flags, duplicate content, and similar structural issues — organized by severity so teams can prioritize fixes rather than working through an undifferentiated error list.
Position Tracking
This module tracks how specific keywords rank over time, segmented by location and device, which matters for any business comparing desktop versus mobile visibility or tracking rankings across multiple cities or regions.
Backlink Analytics
Backlink Analytics maps a domain’s inbound link profile and supports competitive link-gap research — finding sites that link to a competitor but not to you, which is a common starting point for outreach-based link building.
Competitor and Market Analysis
These tools let a user pull a competing domain’s estimated traffic sources, top pages, and keyword overlaps, supporting the kind of competitive benchmarking that would otherwise require piecing together data from several separate sources.
AI Visibility Tracking
Available from the Starter tier up, this newer module tracks how often and how favorably a brand or domain is cited inside AI-generated answers across engines like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini — a category of visibility that traditional rank trackers were not built to measure.
Semrush MCP
Semrush MCP is a connector that exposes Semrush’s underlying data to AI assistants and coding agents, letting technically inclined users pull Semrush data directly into their own automated workflows rather than exporting reports manually.
Feature access varies meaningfully by plan tier — cross-check the Plan Selector above before assuming a specific feature is included at your price point.
Onboarding, Support, and Learning Resources
Semrush maintains a structured onboarding path through what it calls Semrush Academy, a library of free courses and certifications covering the platform’s individual tools as well as broader SEO fundamentals. Vendor-Documented This matters in practice because the platform’s breadth is also its biggest onboarding challenge — a new user opening the dashboard for the first time is presented with dozens of modules at once, and G2 reviewers consistently note that the learning curve is real even if it’s ultimately manageable. Teams evaluating Semrush should budget real onboarding time, particularly if no one on the team has used a comparable all-in-one platform before, rather than assuming the interface will be self-explanatory from day one.
Customer support is delivered through a combination of live chat, a searchable knowledge base, and email ticketing, with response quality generally reported as responsive in aggregated G2 feedback. User-Reported Higher-tier plans and Enterprise agreements typically include more direct account support, though the specifics of what’s included at each tier should be confirmed directly with Semrush’s sales team rather than assumed from this review.
Pros and Cons — and What They Mean for Your Decision
User-Reported — aggregated from independently sourced Semrush reviews on G2, based on more than 3,400 verified user reviews. (source: G2 Semrush reviews) None of the following reflects SEORAF’s own testing. We’ve grouped these by how often each theme actually appears across the review corpus, rather than picking a handful of representative quotes, because a small selection of quotes can make a platform look either better or worse than the aggregate pattern actually supports.
Reasons You Might NOT Want to Buy Semrush
- You’re a single user with a small site or two. The per-seat structure and $139+/mo entry price are built around team usage.
- You’re highly cost-sensitive about billing experience. Read cancellation-related feedback directly, on more than one platform, before committing to annual billing.
- You mainly need one function, like rank tracking or backlink checking. A narrower, cheaper tool may serve that need alone.
- You need the lowest possible entry price. Lower-cost alternatives exist (see below), with narrower feature sets.
If any of these describe you, the Alternatives section below is the more useful next step than the trial link above.
Who Semrush Is Actually For — By Segment
Agencies vs. In-House Teams: What Actually Differs
The distinction between “agency” and “in-house” use isn’t just about company type — it’s about how the multi-site and reporting features get used day to day. An agency managing ten client accounts needs the site-limit headroom and white-label-style reporting more than it needs deep historical data on any single domain, which tends to push agencies toward Advanced once they outgrow Pro+’s 15-site cap. An in-house team, by contrast, is usually managing one domain (or a handful of related ones) in much greater depth over a longer time horizon, where Pro+’s historical-data access and keyword-cannibalization tools do more day-to-day work than a higher site limit would. Neither use case is “better” — they simply load-bear different parts of the same plan structure, which is why the Plan Selector above separates them rather than giving a single blanket recommendation.
Semrush vs. Ahrefs

General third-party positioning of Semrush vs. Ahrefs, based on aggregated independent sources — directional only, not a tested benchmark.
In short: Ahrefs is generally positioned around a larger, more frequently refreshed backlink index and a narrower, more focused SEO toolset, while Semrush is generally positioned around broader all-in-one coverage — including AI-visibility tracking and content-marketing tooling that Ahrefs doesn’t directly match. User-Reported (source: G2 Semrush alternatives comparison)
On G2’s own head-to-head comparison page, users rate Ahrefs and SE Ranking competitively against Semrush on auditing quality and product direction, while Semrush’s broader AI-visibility and reporting toolset remains a differentiator not directly measured in those specific comparisons. For the full feature and pricing breakdown, see our Ahrefs review.
Semrush Alternatives — If This Isn’t Your Fit
If your self-check above pointed you here rather than toward the trial, these are the most commonly cited alternatives, based on G2’s own Semrush-alternatives comparison data. (source: G2)
- Ahrefs (4.5/5 on G2) — generally positioned as stronger on backlink data depth. See our Ahrefs review.
- SE Ranking (4.7/5 on G2) — generally positioned as a lower-cost, agency-friendly option. See our SE Ranking review.
- Moz Pro — generally positioned as the more beginner-friendly, lower-entry-price option, and the only one of the three commonly reported to include a free tier. See our Moz Pro review.
Exact pricing for each alternative changes independently of Semrush’s own pricing — check current figures directly on each vendor’s site before making a final decision.
Our Evaluation Methodology
This review is built from Semrush’s own current pricing and product pages, plus independently sourced, aggregated user feedback from G2 — specifically the platform’s own moderated review corpus of more than 3,400 verified reviews and its published topic-tag breakdown. We have not personally tested Semrush for this review. Every factual claim above is evidence-tagged — Verified, Vendor-Documented, or User-Reported — so you can weigh it accordingly rather than take a single blended score at face value.
We deliberately did not include figures we could not trace to a specific, checkable source. Where independent sources meaningfully disagreed on a number — for example, ratings on review platforms outside G2 — we described the underlying pattern rather than publish a disputed figure as if it were settled. Pricing and plan structure in particular should be treated as accurate as of this page’s last-updated date rather than permanently fixed, since Semrush has revised its pricing architecture more than once in the past year.
This review will be revisited periodically as Semrush’s pricing, feature set, or ownership situation changes materially — the date at the top of this page reflects the most recent check.
